I had the opportunity to volunteer at Camp Joy, which held an event for amputee children, teenagers, and young adults from all over the country. The Camp is located in Clarksville, Ohio and hosted the Paddy Rossbach Youth Camp. While I was only able to go for one night, it was more than enough time to create a memory that I still cherish today. This was the first time I had seen such a congregation of youth amputees. It was remarkable to see how well they managed to overcome their limb loss and live life to the fullest. This made it clear to me how important the management of limb loss is to an individuals happiness.
While working for Miller Prosthetics & Orthotics in Belpre, Ohio, the company sponsored a First Swing Learn to Golf event. This took place at our local country club, where adaptive golf experts came in to teach physical/occupational therapists and coaches of anyone with a limb loss. The teaching involved different techniques on helping an individual overcome their limb loss on the golf course. After the morning session, we were joined by amputees to put our new methods to the test at the driving range. Not only was this a great learning experience, but it was loads of fun for everyone involved. I look forward to becoming involved in similar events for other sports.
